Mission

PreventPregnancyLoss.org exists to reduce the number of unnecessary pregnancy losses. There are more than 2 million pregnancies lost every year. Of those, 700,000 are caused by disorders that could have been treated if they had been diagnosed. Even with diagnosis and treatment, not all of these losses will be prevented. But with more aggressive monitoring for preterm labor and testing after any suspicious pregnancy loss, many of these children will be saved.

History

Our organization was founded by Darci Klein in 2007. Darci’s first pregnancy ended with preterm birth at 28 weeks, followed by the tragedy of four pregnancy losses, including twins at 20 weeks gestation. It was only after the devastation of these losses that she took matters into her own hands, completing her own research into causes of loss and demanding a thorough set of diagnostic tests. Darci was then diagnosed with two treatable disorders, Factor V Leiden and cervical incompetence.

With treatment, Darci’s son was born in 2004. He was her fifth pregnancy, and the only one she ever carried to term. Had she not gotten so involved in her medical care, she may never have had her son.

She felt blessed with her new baby, but couldn’t stop thinking about all the other families who experience loss. She then began to wonder whether her experience was unique, and just how many other families had lost pregnancies which could have been saved.

After a year spent reviewing medical studies and interviewing experts, she discovered the unthinkable: hundreds of thousands of pregnancies are lost every year to treatable disorders that were never diagnosed.

Families needed to know this. She needed to tell them.

Darci hopes to reach thousands of families with her book, To Full Term, which tells her story and implores families to seek testing after pregnancy loss.  She also founded PreventPregnancyLoss.org to reach more families with this life saving message.

The organization will use donations and grants to educate families about preventing loss, and to ask that those families to educate others. When we all know to ask for testing after loss and to ask for thorough screening at the first sign of preterm labor, more families will know the privilege of bringing life into the world.

Communication Strategy

Our website is the hub of our organization. We plan to purchase advertising to raise awareness of the need to seek testing after loss, and to urge families to visit our website to learn more.
